VAT in Thailand: A Simple Guide for Small Business Owners

Value Added Tax (VAT) is one of those topics that can feel overwhelming at first glance — but once you understand the basics, it becomes much more manageable. Here's a friendly breakdown of how VAT works in Thailand and what it means for your business.

Do You Need to Register for VAT?

If your business earns more than 1.8 million baht in annual revenue, you are legally required to register for VAT with the Revenue Department. Once registered, you'll collect 7% VAT on your sales and can claim back the VAT you've paid on business purchases — this is called input tax credit.

How Does It Work in Practice?

Let's say you sell a product for 1,000 baht. You charge your customer 1,070 baht (including 7% VAT). You then remit the 70 baht to the Revenue Department, minus any VAT you paid to your own suppliers. This means if you paid 40 baht in VAT on purchases, you only owe the government 30 baht net.

VAT Filing Requirements

VAT returns (PP.30) must be filed monthly, by the 15th of the following month (or the 23rd if filing online). Consistent, timely filing builds a clean compliance record — and that matters if you're ever audited or applying for business credit.

Exempt and Zero-Rated Activities

Not all businesses fall under the standard VAT regime. Certain activities such as education, healthcare, and the sale of unprocessed agricultural products are VAT-exempt. Some exports and services provided internationally may qualify for 0% VAT. Knowing which category applies to your business is crucial.

Why This Matters for You

Proper VAT management keeps your cash flow predictable and your business legally protected. It also signals professionalism to your clients and partners. If you're unsure whether you need to register or how to handle VAT correctly, speaking to an accounting professional is the best first step.
